Hi there, I’m Karissa.
I am a creative storyteller, graphic designer, and photographer pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations with a minor in Nonprofit Administration at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Mich.
After earning my Associate Degree in Graphic Design from Washtenaw Community College in 2014, I hit the ground running by accepting an opportunity in the for-profit sector at Underground Printing in Ann Arbor, Mich. I quickly worked my way up the ranks from an embroidery operator to a graphic artist to a team lead in less than two years.
As one of UGP’s Art Department Team Leads, I help design marketing collateral including social media graphics and promotional flyers for 30 stores across the United States. I also work closely with the department head to update training procedures, train team members and evaluate team output to improve consistency and efficiency within our department.
UGP has been an influential opportunity in my professional journey where I have built leadership and teamwork skills, but my passion lies in the nonprofit sector and that’s why I’ve returned to the books to earn my degree in public relations and nonprofit administration.
I’m eager to use my visual and written communication skills to engage and inspire people to stand up and make a difference in our world and the lives of others. My concern lies in environmental restoration and protection, youth development and animal welfare.
Currently, I am the marketing and communications intern for the Huron River Watershed Council. At HRWC, I work with team members and on my own to complete a multitude of projects, including a blog post I planned, researched and wrote about a river clean up by our corporate partner, DTE Energy. I’m also currently working on a project with a team to develop tip cards, which will be included in aquatic invasive species decontamination kits for 30 organizations across Michigan.
But my life isn’t all work and no play! In my free time, I enjoy hiking Michigan’s breathtaking trails, kayaking her winding rivers, and snowboarding down her frosty rolling hills. I love to take naps with my 13-year-old puppy named Holly, eat Sunday dinners with my family, and travel with my best friend Zack.
If you want to grab a cup of coffee or go for a hike, shoot me a line.
